Bundle state used to live in a third-party app, one hop away from checkout — which meant it could drift out of sync with what Shopify actually thought was true. This moved that logic natively onto the platform.

What that actually meant in building:

  • One data engine, three views of it A master bundle library lives in app installation metafields, a shop-level summary cache keeps the admin UI fast to load, and published bundles are automatically mirrored to storefront-readable variant metafields — one source of truth instead of three copies drifting apart.
  • Checkout logic Shopify owns, not the app A Cart Transform function registered at install time expands bundle components at checkout, so pricing, discounts, and line generation stay native to Shopify rather than being reimplemented — and re-debugged — in app code.
  • An admin surface built for editing, not just viewing An embedded Shopify admin app (React Router) handles creating, editing, and importing bundle configurations directly, replacing what used to require the third-party app's own dashboard.
